Poppies near Larch Loft

June 10, 2014

What a beautiful day today in the Test Valley, Hampshire.  I had to share with you this wonderful field of poppies, just a mile or so from Larch Loft.  If you can bear to leave Chilbolton Cow Common, carry on over the River Test onto the Fullerton Road and continue on the footpath up the hill to this super field of poppies.

Walk along the River Hamble

March 2, 2014

Self catering holiday ideaWalk along the River Hamble

Half an hour’ s drive from Larch Loft and a great day out is a visit to Hamble.  There is limited parking at the top of Swanwick Shore Road.  From here you can walk all the way along the River Hamble through the Warsash Local Nature Reserve, bring your binoculars.  There is a also a much larger car park here.

002Then why not take the little (only 12 seats) Warsash ferry across to the Hamble, stop for lunch or a coffee at the Blue Star Cafe or there are numerous pubs and restaurants, including the Bugle, in this pretty village with views over the estuary and marina.

Things to do – Salisbury Cathedral Tower Tour

January 27, 2014

Larch Loft look at flooded fieldslarch loft visits Salisbury CathedralSalisbury cathedral viewA wonderful day out from larch loft is a visit to Salisbury Cathedral.  The Cathedral was built in the 12th Century and has the tallest Spire in Britain, not to mention the largest Close and Cloisters.  Make sure you book a slot for the memorable and spectacular  Tower Tour.  The tours, led by an experienced Cathedral guide,  run every day, are for a maximum of 12 people and take around 90 minutes.  It is amongst other things,  a great way to see the beautifully conserved Gothic architecture.  The climb of 332 steps by narrow and winding spiral staircases is absolutely worth it as you can then enjoy spectacular views of the City of Salisbury, Old Sarum and the surrounding countryside, where John Constable painted his famous ‘Salisbury Cathedral from the Water Meadows’.

Beautiful places to visit

January 6, 2014

When you stay at Larch Loft why not take a day trip to the Studland Beach and Nature Reserve.  Owned by the National Trust this beautiful beach and heathland is a wonderful place to spend the day.  Whether you want to walk or cycle there is plenty to see and do or just relax by the sea in this little bit of heaven with its on micro climate. We suggest you drive to Sandbanks, which should take you about an hour and then take the Chain link ferry across Poole Harbour.  Our family made the trip on a stormy January day and despite rough seas and rain it was still a great day out followed by a lovely lunch at Knole Beach Cafe.
